Designing an Exhibition Stand Before a Single Panel Exists.

Exhibition stands live for a week and cost like a building. Here's how to visualise the whole thing, structure, graphics, lighting, before anyone cuts a panel.
Why exhibition stands are the hardest brief to visualise blind
An exhibition stand has no site visit. There's no existing building to photograph, no elevation to survey, no context shot to anchor a render against. Until build week, the "site" is a bare hall floor with a chalk outline and a stand number. Everything the client and contractor sign off on has to be conjured from nothing, and it has to be right, because the thing being approved will exist for three to five days and then get skipped to landfill or storage.
That compresses the risk. In a building project, a snagging issue gets fixed on site over weeks. On a stand, there is no snagging window. The graphics go up, the lighting gets focused, the client walks the aisle on press day, and whatever is wrong is wrong in front of everyone who matters. Budget pressure per square metre is brutal too: stand fabrication runs to tight day-rates for install crews, and a late design change after panels are cut is not a revision, it's a re-order.
Add to that the fact a stand has to read correctly from a single unrepeatable install, at a single lighting rig, on a single aisle sightline, and you can see why visualisation matters more here than almost anywhere else in design practice. There's no second chance to photograph it once it's built wrong.
A stand only exists once. Every visualisation decision made before fabrication starts is doing the job a site visit would do on a permanent building.
Blocking out the stand in Linea before you render anything
Start with volume, not detail. In Linea, Massing lets you push and pull footprint and height fast, so an open frontage stand and an enclosed pavilion can sit side by side as two rough blocks before either commits to a wall build-up. This is the stage for arguing about whether the client wants visitors drawn in past an open threshold or wants a controlled, ticketed entrance. That argument is cheap to have with two grey boxes. It's expensive to have after the graphics panels are printed.
Bring the hall's real dimensions in at this point, not a guess. Venue-issued CAD or a Revit export of the hall gives you the actual column grid, rigging points and fire route widths, and importing that into Linea means the massing gets tested against constraints that are actually going to be there on install day, not an assumption about how much space is available. A stand that looks generous against an assumed 10 by 8 metre plot can turn out tight once a structural column lands inside the footprint.
Once the massing works, switch to Build. This is where parametric walls, screens and openings go in at real thickness, doors get placed where staff need to move product through, and the stand stops being a diagram and starts being a buildable thing. Cut a section through it at this stage. Sightlines, signage height and any ceiling-mounted graphics need checking against the hall's actual clearance under the rigging grid, and a section is the only view that tells you honestly whether the hero graphic panel clears the sprinkler line or not.
Massing settles the argument about frontage and enclosure. Build settles the argument about whether it fits under the rig.
Turning the model into a set of client-ready views in Shoot
Once the geometry is locked, push the Linea perspective straight into rendering. This matters more on a stand than on a building, because a stand has almost no forgiving distance: the client and contractor are both looking at close-range views where structure and material read at once, and if the geometry shifts between the model and the render, discrepancies show up immediately on close inspection.
Shoot is built around generating a full set of camera angles from one scheme, handling exterior and interior separately so each gets the treatment it needs. For a stand, that typically means: an approach view from the aisle showing how the frontage reads to someone walking past at head height, a hero shot straight into the stand from the main sightline, and an interior view from inside a meeting pod or product display area, where the lighting and materials are doing a different job entirely.
The deliverable here is stills, and that's deliberate, not a compromise. Exhibition contractors still price and programme almost entirely off PDF packs: plans, elevations, 3D perspectives and a finish schedule. A finished set of renders is the outcome a client actually needs in order to sign off a stand build. Motion is nice to have for a pitch, but it isn't what gets a fabrication contract priced, and treating stills as the primary output rather than a rough draft before video keeps the whole workflow focused on what actually gets approved.
Exhibition contractors quote against stills, not film. A complete set of camera angles is the finished product, not a placeholder for something more elaborate.
Testing lighting and time of day without a second render pass
Hall lighting is not something you control until build week, and even then it changes: houselights drop for evening sessions, some halls run daylight through atrium glazing, others are windowless boxes lit entirely by the rig. A stand that reads well under bright even hall light can disappear once the houselights dim for an evening reception, and a stand relying on translucent branded panels can look completely different depending on whether daylight is hitting it from outside.
Rather than commissioning a fresh render for each lighting scenario, Retouch's one-click re-light presets regenerate the whole scene as a new layer under a different lighting condition. Dusk, Blue hour and Night presets show how the stand performs once hall ambient light drops and the stand's own lighting has to do the work of holding attention. Each preset is a genuine regeneration of the scene, not a colour grade laid over the same image, so a client comparing the day version against the night version is looking at two honest lighting states rather than a tinted variant of one. That distinction matters when the sign-off conversation is specifically about whether the stand needs its own internal lighting rig or can rely on the hall's ambient wash.
Material swap earns its keep at the same stage. Before a cladding or graphic panel order goes to a supplier, swapping the surface in the render against the actual supplier reference sample shows whether a specified laminate finish reads the way the spec sheet suggests it will once it's under stand lighting rather than daylight in a showroom.
A stand lit for daytime hall traffic and a stand lit for an evening drinks reception are two different design problems. Testing both before fabrication starts costs nothing but a re-light preset.
Presenting the stand for sign-off and contractor briefing
Sign-off on a stand needs to bundle plan, section, elevation, finish schedule and render into one coherent document, because a contractor pricing fabrication and a client approving the design are both reading the same pack, just for different reasons. Splitting these across separate PDFs invites the exact kind of miscommunication a three-day build cannot absorb.
